Creating categories and tags

To allow your users to categorise or tag their transactions, you must create categories and tags for them to choose from. This article takes you through how to set these up in your account and make changes to them in future.

Using Xero? Your categories and tags can be created from your Chart of Accounts and Tracking Categories. See how to connect Budgetly to Xero here.

If you use an accounts software other than Xero, you can still create Categories in Budgetly.

Tags are available to those on Premium for further transaction categorisation.

See below how to set these up.

Categories

To get started on your categories, navigate to them under the Settings menu.

Group 527

Categories allow your users to specify what type of purchase they have made and are typically aligned to your accounting software's chart of accounts when it comes time to reconcile.

To add your categories, simply type the name in the box and add another by clicking "+ Add more".

Continue this process until you have added as many as you like.

Then, select 'Save categories'.

Tags

Available only on our Premium plan

Tags are typically used for further categorisation on your transactions. This may be by department, location, employee name, etc. These often will be reconciled against Tracking Categories in Xero or Activity Codes in MYOB.

Users can assign one tag per group (colour) to a transaction, unless an Admin has enabled the option to select more than one tag.

To create your tag groups and the corresponding tags, you can follow these steps.

For users to be able to assign more than one tag in the group to a transaction, ensure "Allow user to select multiple tags" checkbox is checked.

  1. Navigate to the Tags section of your Settings Menu.

  5. Once you have created your chosen tags, select Save changes at the bottom of the page.

Changes can be made to tags at anytime by repeating the above steps.

Once you have created your categories and tags, you may wish to set some as defaults* within your budgets for your users' ease. See how here.
