When you upload a receipt, Budgetly’s AI reads the GST amount and checks the receipt for accuracy.
How GST extraction works
- Upload a receipt to a transaction (via the app or by emailing it to Buddy AI).
- Budgetly’s AI reads the receipt and extracts the GST amount.
- The extracted GST appears in the GST field on the transaction edit form.
- A status indicator next to the GST field shows the extraction result.
GST extraction statuses
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Extracted | GST was successfully read from the receipt |
| Not found | The receipt didn’t contain a clear GST amount |
| Pending | Extraction is still processing |
Tip: You can always manually enter or correct the GST amount, even after automatic extraction.
Enabling GST extraction
GST extraction is controlled at the company level.
Important: GST extraction is available on Premium plans and above. On Essentials plans, the toggle is replaced with a “Premium plan” badge.
- Click Settings in the sidebar, then select Preferences.
- Navigate to the General tab and toggle Enable GST extraction on.
- Select Save preferences.

Marking a transaction as “receipt not needed”
For transactions that don’t require a receipt (e.g. small purchases), an admin can toggle Receipt not needed on the transaction edit form. This removes the receipt requirement for that transaction.
Common questions
Does GST extraction work on all receipts?
It works on most standard Australian tax invoices. Handwritten or blurry receipts may not extract correctly. You can always enter the GST manually.
Can I override the extracted GST amount?
Yes. Edit the GST field on the transaction at any time. Your manual entry takes priority over the extracted value.
Why is my GST showing as 'Not found'?
The receipt may not have a clear GST line item, or the image quality may be too low. Upload a clearer photo or enter the GST manually.
